Institute scientists carried out research in Burundi

On December 2-14, 2024, Maria Makarova, head, intestinal infections laboratory, and Samida Zhamborova, junior researcher, intestinal infections laboratory, performed scientific research activities at the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) of Burundi (Bujumbura, Republic of Burundi) on the topic "Problems of diarrheal diseases" (implementation of measures during the external monitoring of infectious diseases within the framework of the Federal project "Sanitary Shield").

As a result of the meeting with INSP Director, coordinator and laboratory staff, and during the discussion of the results obtained, prospects for further joint work on the etiological decoding acute intestinal infections cases, monitoring clinically significant resistance of pathogens to antimicrobial drugs in Burundi were outlined.

Based on the results of the research conducted, a report was prepared and a plan for further joint scientific research on the problem of diarrheal diseases of bacterial etiology in the Republic of Burundi was agreed upon. It was recommended to continue collecting stool samples from patients with symptoms of acute intestinal infection, in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the Saint Petersburg Pasteur Institute and the National Institute of Public Health of Burundi dated July 28, 2023.
