On December 9-21, 2024, scientists of the Institute conducted scientific and practical research on diphtheria and the etiology of fevers of unknown genesis at the Russian-Guinean Research Center of Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases (CREMS, Republic of Guinea).
Galina Kokorina, senior researcher, laboratory of medical bacteriology, and Nikita Goncharov, junior researcher, laboratory of medical bacteriology, carried out research in the field of "Improving laboratory diagnostics of diphtheria in the Republic of Guinea". Regina Baimova and Islam Karmokov, junior researchers, laboratory of zoonotic infections, worked on the program "Study of the etiology of fevers of unknown genesis in the Republic of Guinea" (activities to conduct extraterritorial monitoring of infectious threats in the Republic of Guinea within the framework of the federal project "Sanitary shield of the country - health safety (prevention, detection, response)".
During the mission, over 500 studies of blood serum samples were conducted by the ELISA method and about 200 swabs from the throat by the PCR method were performed. The scientists also trained Guinean colleagues in the diagnostic research by the PCR method skills.
Based on the results of the conducted research on the diphtheria diagnosis, it was decided to continue scientific research in this direction. Blood serum samples and throat swabs will be collected from patients suspected of having this disease. The collection of material from febrile patients with an unspecified diagnosis will also continue.
