Institute experts conducted scientific and practical research in Venezuela

On October 13-23, 2024, Dr. Anna Gladkikh, Head, Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Monitoring, and Tatyana Arbuzova, Junior Researcher, Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Monitoring, conducted scientific and practical research at the “Rafael Rangel” National Institute of Hygiene (INHRR) of the Ministry of People's Power for Health of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Caracas) within the framework of a bilateral agreement on scientific and technical cooperation in the field of ensuring the sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population of Venezuela. They also took part at  the Scientific Conference dedicated to the 45th Science Day on the occasion of the 86th anniversary of the “Rafael Rangel” National Institute of Hygiene.

Russian scientists performed training for the Venezuelan colleagues and carried out research work on sequencing the genome of the Mammarenavirus guanaritoense virus isolated from patients who had suffered hemorrhagic fever.

“Rafael Rangel” National Institute of Hygiene experts were trained in fragment sequencing methods on the Russian genetic analyzer "NANOFOR 05".

As part of the conference, Anna Gladkikh presented a report "Near-complete sequencing of the Mammarenavirus guanaritoense genome from recent human hemorrhagic fever cases in Venezuela". Based on the results of the commission's assessments, the report was awarded a 1st degree diploma.

The parties discussed the data obtained and prospects for further work within the framework of Russian-Venezuelan cooperation on sequencing the genomes of various viruses.
