The Saint Petersburg Pasteur Institute provided a training to experts from the Republic of Guinea

On June 17-28, 2024, the Institute conducted training for experts from the Research Institute of Applied Biology of the Republic of Guinea (IRBAG) on mastering the bacteriological method of diphtheria testing.

Researchers of the Medical Bacteriology Laboratory trained their Guinean colleagues in the rules of preparing culture media for all stages of bacteriological research, selecting material for research, sowing it, isolating a pure culture, microscopy, biochemical identification, and performing tests for pathogenicity and toxigenicity, introduced the Guinean to the mass spectrometric method of pathogen identification. The Guinean scientists mastered their practical skills necessary for bacteriological testing for diphtheria, studied the rules for monitoring culture media, working with reference strains and maintaining records. The colleagues became familiar with molecular research methods for diphtheria (PCR) and serological methods used to assess the population’s protection from infection.

In course of the joint work, the colleagues were provided with the necessary literature on the laboratory diagnosis of diphtheria, developed and recommended by WHO, the Pasteur Institute in Paris, as well as Russian educational and methodological documentation.
